Meet The Two Young Mountaineers Who Explored A New Peak And Named It Mount Kalam

Arjun Vaipai and Bhupesh Kumar could have been two very ordinary names for two very ordinary boys.

But they are not. These boys did the unthinkable and climbed a 20275.59 ft (6180 meters) high, untouched peak near Bara Shigri glacier, Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh, and named it in honor of our late president, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

They are the first people to climb this peak and leave a mark. The peak overlooks the Himalayan landscape and the two finished scaling the peak in a mere 7 days time, starting on 8th October and reaching the summit on 14th October.

Before starting the climb, Arjun Vajpai put up a motivational post on his Facebook feed, that said:

#Expeditionupdate All set! Leaving for #batal early in the morning with Bhupesh and Rishab. No network after Rohtang and…

Arjun, who has already scaled the Everest in May 2010, told DNA:

“Former President, Kalam had proved us that it doesn’t matter where you are born as long as you have what it takes to do it. The journey of a fisherman’s son to the President of the largest democracy in the world is no easy feat. But it did show us that that nothing is impossible and while chasing our dreams we might come across capabilities and hurdles that we didn’t know of. During our Summit even we came close to this when we were climbing. We didn’t know what hurdles might come next. But we were determined enough to do it.”

When asked about why they decided to scale this new peak, the boys said that they wanted to inspire the younger generation to explore more in the field of mountaineering and added this:

“Indian is an unexplored gem of mountaineering and adventure sports. People from around the world point towards India and say India is going to be the future of mountaineering in the world. It is time the youngsters of our country who are into mountaineering and adventure sports take the leap and unearth these unexplored mountains and conquer them. Records may make and break, but it is about what you leave behind. Mt Kalam is going to be our ‪legacy. I feel the youth should start putting their mark on unexplored mountains and name it after great Indian personalities.”

Great job guys. What Arjun and Bhupesh have achieved is commendable and we need more inspirational and brave youth like them in the country.
