Patriarchal norms and notions have been so ingrained in our society that they have crept their way into our Government procedures and system as well. It is a common practice mostly fill up our fathers’ names whenever we are involved in a Government process like getting a driving license.
However, the capital of the country has taken on the responsibility of changing this age-old practice. In a historic step, from the month of April 2018, those who wish to apply for a driving licence can use their mother’s name instead of their father’s name, or their husband’s name.
The Delhi Transport Department has taken this progressive step for people who do not want to include their father’s name in their application, as the driving licence is an important ID proof. As reported by Times Of India, a senior official from the Transport Department said,
“This is a big step in bringing gender equality at the transport department and we plan to bring in this change by April. This would be a big help specifically for those who for some reason do not want to provide their father’s name or have a single parent. We are modifying our software to bring in these changes. We believe the software tweaks should be ready this week.”
This is indeed a huge step towards gender equality as the capital will be the first state to issue licenses with the mother’s name. What better way to introduce such a step than in the country’s capital? It is a start towards gender equality and we are extremely proud!
