Bugatti Unveils The Most Expensive Car In The World At ₹132 Crores

A while back, I read a book called ‘Turtles All the Way Down’ by John Green. The protagonist of the story said something that resonated with me on a deep level. “I don’t like to throw the L-word around; it’s too good and rare a feeling to cheapen with overuse.” But today it has to be used. I’m going to say it – I LOVE LOVE LOVE Bugatti’s new supercar!

The Bugatti ‘La Voiture Noire’ was unveiled at the 89th Geneva International Motor Show in Switzerland. Isn’t it a thing of pure beauty?

La Voiture Noire is French for ‘the black car’. The company has made only one single piece and sold it to an unidentified buyer for $18.9 million (~ Rs. 132 crores). Here’s a look at it from all possible angles.

The inspiration behind the design dates back to the 1930s

Bugatti was founded by a French man named Ettore Bugatti. His eldest son, Jean Bugatti, was one of the most iconic automotive designers of the company. In the 1930s, he handcrafted a car called the Type 57SC Atlantic. Only 4 pieces were made. 3 were sold to buyers but Jean kept the 4th for himself and painted it all-black. Even today these are considered the best sports coupés ever made.

Unfortunately, Jean’s “La Voiture Noire” went missing during the Second World War. Only 3 of the original 4 cars exist today and are the most expensive vintage cars anyone can buy. The president of the company, Stephan Winkelmann, was quoted by Forbes as saying,

“We are paying tribute to a long tradition, to France and the creative work of Jean Bugatti. At the same time, we are transferring extraordinary technology, aesthetics and extreme luxury to a new age.”

Designer Etienne Salomé says this is not just a car, it is ‘Automotive Haute Couture’. He also talks about the 4 features that represent a true Bugatti.

It comes with a W16 8-litre 16-cylinder engine, develops 1,479 horsepower and 1,180 pounds-feet of torque.

With such a massive price tag, there are some who are calling it a hype-car. But I’m too blindsided by its seductive colour, curves and charisma to listen to them. How about you?
