If you’ve grown up in a typical desi household in the 90s, chances are your childhood home had things like liquid bindi boxes, eating out of steel plates, and playing games like ‘poshampa’ and ‘rail gaadi’.
Now, a Twitter user refreshed everyone’s memory by posting a photo of the mosaic flooring many of us had in our houses growing up.
Indian mosaic floors probably came in vogue during the 50s. So wonderful and so suited to our environment. Cool, easy to maintain and the dust and stains also get absorbed. Cheaper & faster options have replaced them in the last couple of decades. pic.twitter.com/1ac3M04acf

And most people were all hearts for it:
1. This farsh is supreme, you can’t change my mind!
I judge people who reject these mosaic floors.

I used to spend hours searching imaginary images/figures in these patterns, esp. in the washroom 😜
And to my surprise I could find many.

3. The staple of our homes before marble, tiles, and wood replaced it.
Chips of different colours and sizes were to be purchased ! They were in the fashion till early 90s ! Then vanished everywhere.

4. And as it turns out, there were some benefits to it as well.
I realised these are perfect for kitchens. Little bit of water spill doesn't make it dangerously slippery. Our first home built by parents also had it. Have seen some real color pop and patterns in some old houses prominently in South of India

5. Some people shared photos of how they still have the same flooring in their home.

6. A small history lesson about their origin.
Yes of course. Ancient Greece has some magnificent examples. In fact they are to be found in many ancient sites across the Mediterranean region. But modern day more humble use is typical of Indian homes during mid 20th cen

7. And then there were others who weren’t such a big fan of the mosaic.
