5 Heartwarming Short Stories That Show How You’re Exactly Like Your Mother

This mother’s day we’re all going to tell our moms how much we love them, even though we don’t express it. But I’m going to thank mine. I’m going to thank her for all those times I learned from example, for the times she’s taught me to love endlessly, to work with vigor and rooted me to the ground.

For all those times, she’s made me like her. Because there’s nothing better than learning from the best.

1. Matching Footsteps.

The saree didn’t drape as perfectly on me as it did on her. She’d walk around this office and command respect, knowing she’d earned it. Today even as her post-retirement picture sits on my desk, I’m forced to wonder, ‘Am I good enough?’. My nervousness is pleasantly interrupted by, “Ma’am, they’re ready for you”.

As I walk down the corridor to the conference room filled with 100 of my mother’s employees, the click-clack of my heels sounds increasingly familiar to my 10-year-old self. Apparently, it sounds familiar to the employees as well, because as I stand at the head of the table, I know they see my mother in me. And I’m proud to say, so do I.

2. She is the change in the world

She was everyone’s go-to person, not just mine. She’d teach the underprivileged and cook for the hungry. She never forced me to get a fancy job, she encouraged me to make a difference in the society. She didn’t care how I looked or how ladylike I was. She’s done the world a big service and even at the age of 80, she’s unstoppable.

So when I got a job at an MNC, I was unsure how I’d be able to make a difference to so many lives. But all of that worry washed away, when I saw my mother’s face beaming with pride as she cut the ribbon to inaugurate, ‘Sarswati’s Shelter for the Homeless’. In so many years she’d done so much for everyone, but no one did anything for her. This was my way of appreciating my mother, for making me even a little bit like her.

3. Forever Grateful

I always thought managing a house was no big deal, maybe that’s why there were times when I didn’t take my mom seriously when she said she was busy. I always thought she was a bit of a neat freak and so, I resolved to be more lax about cleanliness in my life.

The first time I lived away was when I turned 20. I lived up to my promise, I wasn’t particular about cleanliness, I didn’t stress about the dishes nor the dust. Until one day I couldn’t call it home anymore. I picked up the broom and never put it back down. Today I take color coordination tips from my mom and I’m not ashamed at all. I’m just grateful.

4. Remembering Rebellion

MOm--new

Just last week I yelled out to my daughter in frustration, “I’ve seen the world, you need to be more cautious” and she said, “Mom, I’m smarter than you give me credit for”, before swinging the door shut. I froze in the spot and burst out laughing. The swinging door was not a new phenomenon, the only difference was, I used to be on the other side of it in my 20’s.

And now I realize why this sentence came so easily to me, because it’s what my Maa used to say to me. I wish I could tell her, I understand everything you ever did, but then she’d tell me, “I told you so” and I really don’t want to hear that, even at 48.

5. Our Superhero

“You look so much like your father”, this is what I’ve grown up hearing. My dad’s the kind who’d colour within the lines, make a to-do list and teach about great men. But what no one knows is that, my mother is our superhero.

She’s artistic, absent-minded and really smart. My paintings might look like amateur doodles lying next to her masterpieces, my love for art is nothing in front of her pure passion, my crooked smile looks like a runner-up to her 100watt grin. But in spirit, she’s my idol and every day I try to be more like her. Because she lives in the moment, just like me. So I might look like my dad, but within, I am my mom.

She’s shown you the sky when you thought your ceiling was the limit, she’s loved with all her heart and made you humble, she’s lived up to every promise just to see you smile.

She’s the best thing that happened to you and being her mirror image means you’ve got a path of greatness cut out for you.
