Discrimination on the basis of skin tone and casual racist remarks are unfortunately not that uncommon in the country. However, they must be called out at every single instance and especially when spoken by people in the public domain.
India Today reports that at a public meeting on March 30, Karnataka MLA Zameer Ahmed Khan referred to former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy as “Kaala Kumaraswamy” (kaala translates to black in Hindi).

Subsequently, Bengaluru Yuva JDS workers lodged a complaint against him and sought legal action by submitting a complaint and the CD with his speech to Bengaluru Police Commissioner Kamal Pant. They also protested outside the MLA’s residence. He was quoted adding,
“Yesterday JDS workers protested in front of my house. They filed a complaint also. If Kumaraswamy was fair, and I had called him black/dark then it’s my mistake. He’s dark. People call me short, God made us like this. God made him dark, so he’s dark. Dark will be called dark only.”
