13 Times Medical Surgeons Did The Impossible In The Operation Theatre

Doctors are miracle workers.

Because some of the work they do is nothing short of miracles. The human body is incredibly complex and to cut into it and somehow repair it with instruments that can cause major damage with the slightest of errors takes a lot of skill and confidence.

And as much as the human body is complex, it is also very delicate. Once damaged, it is very difficult to repair and correct the damage completely. But doctors do it  – every day.

Let’s take a look at some of the miracle surgeries they have done.

1. Doctors gave a man two hearts to live with

Tyson Smith’s heart was failing, and the traditional way to solve this problem was to replace the failing heart with a new one – a classic heart transplant.

But then the doctors found out that Mr. Smith could not have survived a transplant because he was too weak. So they put a second heart inside his cavity to share the work.

Mr. Smith now has two hearts inside his chest, and he has never been stronger in his life.

A woman in Holland came to the doctors complaining of severe stomach ache. Then she admitted to eating spoons and forks. This problem is documented as a personality disorder where a patient has a craving to eat anything that is not food.

But the doctors were astonished to find 78 forks and spoons inside of her – a whole damn set of them from the cutlery drawer at her place.

The woman was kept under strict supervision and given therapy after she made full recovery, thanks to her surgeons.

According to science, any fall from more than 4 floors high is near fatal.

Then there was Alcides Moreno who fell from 47 floors high and still survived the fall. The surgeons operated on him right in the emergency room, putting in 11 liters of blood and 9 liters of plasma in the process.

The doctors managed to repair all except one of the 10 fractures he suffered.

The last man to survive a high fall was a man who fell from the 19th floor.

When you lose an eye, you would expect the doctors to do an eye transplant. But the problem with Martin Jones was that both his eyes were beyond repair when a hot tub of melted aluminium exploded on his face.

One of his eyes was lost completely, but the doctors didn’t give up on the second eye. The took one of Jones’ teeth and fashioned an eyeball out of it, and put it exactly where we have our iris. Then they stitched tissue all around it so that it looked like a real eye.

Martin Jones can see once again, this time, through a tooth.

That is literally the coolest surgery ever.

Darek Fidyka was stabbed multiple times in the back, which completely paralysed him from the chest down. His spinal cord was completely severed and he couldn’t feel anything below the chest at all.

Such an injury is irreparable. But doctors had an idea. There are special cells in our noses that regenerate nerves, which allows us to smell everything.

They took a small drop of these cells and put them where the spinal cord was cut.

And voila! Darek can walk with the help of a frame again.

The two extra legs were that of a twin that didn’t develop well inside the womb and instead fused itself to Lakshmi’s body.

Conjoined twins have always been complicated to separate because they share a lot of organs. Separating the organs so that both of them survive is a devilishly complicated business. Most of them die, but in Lakshmi’s case, it was a bit  simpler in the sense that only four alien legs were to be removed.

More than 30 doctors worked for more than 27 hours to remove both the legs. Lakshmi survived the operation successfully and is living a normal life.

When doctors recommend that they will remove a half of your brain, you will think twice won’t you?

Jessie Hall was just 6 when she suffered from a  rare condition that gave her seizures very frequently. Doctors decided that they will remove the whole left side of her brain – the side that was causing them.

And the doctors did successfully remove it. Jessie Hall lives a very normal life without seizures. She loves playing basketball and is 13 years old today.

So he went ahead and operated n himself – he cut out his own appendix using almost no anaesthesia – using a lamp and a mirror.

Balls. Balls of steel.

Losing a thumb is very serious matter. Losing a toe isn’t because you can still regain the sense of balance after some time.

The thumbs are why humans have an advantage over other species – opposable thumbs, to be more specific.

So, when James Byrne lost his left thumb, doctors removed his big toe from his left leg and put it in its place. According to James, the procedure went well and he can now wiggle his toe/thumb as well as he could do it with his original one.

A worker in a Chinese had his hand severed from his wrist in an industrial accident. There was very little chance of his hand surviving outside his body, so they grafted it to his leg for a week.

Attached there, the hand repaired most of the serious damages to the tendons and nerves. After the doctors were satisfied with the progress, they attached the hand back to his wrist in an operation that took 10 hours.

A very out-of-the-box thinking even for a creative branch such as surgery.

Sanju Bhagat didn’t know that he carried a baby in his belly for more than 35 years. The baby was nothing but his own deformed twin that had been absorbed into his own body during the pregnancy, much like the case of Lakshmi above.

The doctors expected to find a large tumor, but then found that the tumor had hair, bones, limbs and jaws.

He had given a stillbirth to his own twin brother after carrying him for 36 years.
