Quitting Smoking Is Like Conquering The Everest And These Smokers Led By Milind Soman Have Attempted It

It doesn’t take long for an occasional habit to turn into an addiction. But getting rid of that addiction could consume your entire life. Take smoking, for example. An addiction that pretty much signs your death sentence should motivate you to overcome it easily no? On the contrary, for smokers who attempt to quit smoking, it is a difficult mountain to climb. In fact, call it your personal Everest, if you will.

But the thing about both, ascending the Everest and overcoming a smoking habit, is that though they seem a difficult feat, they’re not impossible. And Nicotex is giving a bunch of smokers a headstart for both with their latest endeavour, I Can You Can.

It all began with a contest hosted by Nicotex, which asked people to send in stories of their ongoing struggle to quit smoking as well as success stories of how they managed to kick the habit. Three smokers and three ex-smokers were then chosen for an adventurous journey to the Everest basecamp in Nepal.

The idea of the show I Can You Can by Nicotex was to enable these smokers to surmount Everest, both literally and figuratively. Both would involve a display of immense physical and mental strength, dealing with all the ups and downs, regular trysts with failure and a constant desire to relapse into temptation. But if victorious, it would change their lives forever.

Of course, this mission needed a leader, someone who was fit enough and who could understand the struggles these challengers would face. Someone who had conquered his own personal Everest. And no one was a more perfect fit than Milind Soman!

Having been a smoker once in his life, Milind managed to kick the habit and turn his life into an inspiration for every fitness freak. He wouldn’t just be their guide, but also a role model for them.

And so it began! I Can You Can by Nicotex: the ultimate challenge to tackle a 65 km-walk and a 17,600 ft climb to the Everest basecamp, and in the process, the habit of smoking too!

Their journey was encapsulated into a 6-episode series, with each episode dealing with a new dilemma, a new triumph for each of the challengers.

The first step was accepting the fact that they were really going to do this. There were doubts, extreme nervousness and of course the fear of failure. And yet, they persisted.

The climb they had ahead of them seemed even more difficult when they began feeling homesick. But it was time to buck up and move on.

Episode 3 was when it finally sunk in: the initial fun days were over. It was time for the harsh reality to set in. Thinning air coupled with a an exhausting climb was proving to be a true taskmaster.

Of course, there were injuries and setbacks which seemed demoralising at that moment. The real test was to overcome them all and keep going.

Stress wasn’t just physical; this was a test of their mental strength too. And it wasn’t going to be easy. The closer they got to their destination, the harder it was getting for them to keep going.
