Mexico Fans Celebrated Their Win Against Germany So Hard That They Caused An Earthquake

Those who’ve watched 2014’s World Cup know what Germany did to Brazil. In case you don’t, here’s the gist. They took on the champions on their home turf and beat them by 7-1. In addition to that, they took the trophy home to complete their near perfect run in the tournament. So, it was natural that they were the favourites this year.

However, when they faced off with Mexico, things didn’t go as planned for them. And fans of the Mexico football team have left a scathing reminder of that on the seismograph.

Defending champions Germany went up against Mexico during their group stage opener and lost. Mexican fans celebrated so hard that they literally shook the Earth.

I know how ridiculous all this sounds but facts and figures don’t lie. When the group F match began, Germany looked well in control. However around half an hour into the game, it seemed like they were losing their ground. And that’s when Mexico started to weave their way through the German defence.

When the clock hit the 35th minute mark, Hirving “Chucky” Lozano made his way into the penalty box and successfully shot the ball past Manuel Neuer. And the crowd went absolutely wild in the stadium and especially in Mexico City. The celebrations were so huge their that seismologists in Mexico said that they caused an artificial earthquake.

Don’t believe me? Well, here’s the proof:

“The #sismo detected in Mexico City originated artificially. Possibly by massive jumps during the goal of the selection of #México in the World Cup. At least two sensors inside the city detected it at 11:32.”

Netizens were surprised by Mexico’s love for their football team, and for good reason, and reacted to this once-in-a-lifetime occurrence.

1. That’s the only way to celebrate.

2. True that!

3. It’s heartening to see fans like these.

Mexico’s win over Germany is like a modern incarnation of the David and Goliath story. And there’s a certain kind of satisfaction to see the underdogs win. Although we’ve an entire tournament ahead of us, it’s these kinds of upsets that keeps things interesting and makes us expect the unexpected.
