The Irony: Mental Health Startup Fires Employee For Liking Post On Toxic Work Environments

Several companies, with their jargon-heavy advocacy for mental health, fail to meet their own standards. They make claims of promoting mental health but in reality, do the opposite. A story on these lines was shared by a Reddit user on the subreddit r/IndianWorkplace.

An employee at a mental health startup was fired for merely liking a LinkedIn post about toxic workplaces.

The employee wrote about the environment at the workplace, with a manager who created a hostile work environment and a CEO who acted kind but was, in truth, manipulative. The company had weird rules, dynamics, and a deeply toxic culture that affected the employee’s mental well-being so severely that they would often find themselves crying in the office restroom.

The employee, who is so passionate about mental health, came across a post on LinkedIn on toxic workplaces that resonated with them deeply. Unfortunately, the CEO saw this as a threat, interpreting it as the employee spreading negativity about the company. Without any discussion or attempt to understand the employee’s side, the CEO decided to let them go.

“I was let go because I liked a post on LinkedIn that talked about toxic workplaces. This is something that I am so passionate (employee mental health, etc) about so liking a post didn’t seen to do any harm. Not only that, the post itself sounded very very relatable. The next thing I know is my CEO calls me over and fired me saying she can’t work with me because apparently I am spreading wrong things about the company,” the employee wrote on Reddit.

Responding to the post, several people couldn’t get over the situation – the stark irony of a mental health startup failing to provide a safe and supportive environment for its own employees. The company chose to silence an employee for merely liking a post. The employee didn’t directly attack the company, or write a post exposing the toxic work environment. Just a ‘like’- that’s all it took.

So much for mental health advocacy.

This story is a stark reminder of the gap between what companies preach about mental health and how they actually treat their employees.
