90-Year-Old Woman Allegedly Gang-Raped By Two Men In Tripura; Is Humanity Dead?

“The day a woman can walk freely on the roads at night, that day we can say that India has achieved independence,” said the Karnataka High Court last week while recommending a death penalty for all gang-rape convicts instead of a jail term. But the recent horror of an unimaginable crime has surfaced, which goes on to question the safety of women in their own homes as well.

As per a report in TOI, a case has been registered against two men for allegedly gang-raping a 90-year old elderly woman after barging into her home in Barhaldi village, which is in North Tripura’s Kanchanpur district. An FIR has been lodged against a 35-year old man named Anjan Nama who is a resident of the same village, and another unidentified man. None of the accused have been arrested so far.

Bhanupada Chakraborty, who is the Superintendent of Police, said, “One of the accused used to call the woman, who was living alone in her house, ‘grandmother’. On the night of the incident, he and another man broke into the house and raped the elderly woman.”

The elderly survivor recounted, “Anjan and another man stormed into my house at midnight. They raped me and left me almost half-dead. When I regained my senses the next morning, I informed my neighbor. But Anjan is a very powerful person and we did not dare to take a stand against him.”

Deccan Herald reports that she had fallen ill after the incident took place on October 24, but didn’t inform the police. When her relatives got to know about the incident five days later, they lodged the complaint on October 29. The police then took the survivor to the hospital, completed her medical examination, and recorded her statement on the basis of which an inquiry has been started, the officer said.

Chakraborty said that the investigation into the case is underway and a manhunt has been launched to nab the absconding men, Times Now reports.

We hope and pray that the culprits are punished, and speedy justice is ensured. Yet again, the gruesome question still remains for all of us- is there really no place where a woman can be safe?

(The victim’s identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault).
