Suicide is the worst thing a person can do to himself. The decision to commit suicide is a bleak one, where the victim sees no hope in life other than death by suicide.
What becomes inexplicable is when people in large groups start committing suicides.
It must have taken a fantastic amount of brainwashing to convince a large number of people to lose all their hope and kill themselves. Some of these mass suicides are for honour, some for a person and some for reasons too bizarre to understand. Read on!
1. 909 people kill themselves by drinking cyanide in Jonestown, USA
Self-proclaimed Guru, Jim Jones brainwashed almost everyone in Jonestown by promising them paradise. He used sophisticated brainwashing techniques to make his followers and residents of Jonestown in to literally sheep. Obviously, the gimmick did not turn out to be fine because people were still overworked and when people finally started leaving, Jim Jones appealed to his followers that they commit suicide to escape fascism.
300 of the 902 people who committed suicide were children and the people who tried to run away were shot. Children who didn’t want to commit suicide were forcefully injected with cyanide.
2. 24,000 women in Jaisalmer fort committed suicide (Jauhar) to avoid rape and assault by Mughal conquerors
In 1294, during the siege of Jaisalmer fort all food and ammunition were exhausted. There were two options – to either surrender and to fight until death. Both the scenarios would mean sure death for the men(soldiers) and rape for the women – who would be alive when captured.
The queens and women were informed of the defeat and 24,000 killed themselves – across all ages – infancy to adulthood.
In addition to that 3800 men also walked out of the gates to a sure death.
3. 39 people killed themselves to get on a spaceship and to escape Earth
Marshall Applewhite, founder of the Heaven’s Gate cult proclaimed himself as the descendant of Jesus Christ. He somehow convinced his followers that the Earth was going to be wiped clean by an alien species.
When a comet appeared in the sky, Applewhite convinced that it was an alien spaceship coming to kill everyone on the planet. 39 people killed themselves convinced by the madman’s words.
4. 778 members of a Christian cult blew themselves up in Uganda after eating roast bulls and soft drinks
The group was named Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God and they believed that on March 17, 2000, the world was about to end. But they didn’t want to wait until March. So they decided to get inside a room, eat roasted bulls and drink and kill themselves. People who tried to run were shot and stabbed.
Even today Ugandan officials don’t know the real cause of the mass death.
5. 8000 men, women, and children jumped off a cliff to their death to escape American soldiers in WW II in Saipan, Japan
Japanese propaganda spread like a wildfire that American troops were raping women and children and to save the honour of Japan they were told to commit suicide. In Saipan, the cliff they jumped off from is now known as the suicide cliff.
Japanese reporters called this incident ‘the finest act of the Shōwa period‘
6. 50 women threw their babies and then jumped off the cliff of Souli singing and dancing
When Ali Pasha’s soldiers surrounded the women of Souli in Greece, they took their children and ran to a cliff where they threw their children first and then jumped to their deaths dancing and singing to the humiliation of the conquering soldiers.
This act was called as ‘The Dance of Zalongo.’
7. 74 members of a cult committed suicide to escape hypocrisies and oppression of this world and move to the star Sirius
Members of the cult of The Solar Temple donated close to a million dollars each to the founder trying to fight the oppression of this world. Then almost all of them committed suicide trying to escape the world and move to the star Sirius.
They tried to do it again but the FBI thwarted the next attempt.
8. The king of Bali led a procession of 1000 people who stabbed themselves to death to escape Dutch occupation
It happened in Denpasar, Bali. When they saw that defeat was imminent, the king led 1000 people with the priest overseeing it. On his signal, the priest stabbed the king and the rest killed themselves in a similar fashion.
Needless to say, the Dutch army was stunned by the events.
9. 76 people died as they had a standoff with the Texan police and national guard and set their own building on fire
They belonged to the group Branch Davidians who believed that Jesus will come back one day. That certainly did not happen. David Koresh, their founder was suspected to have a large batch of weapons and explosives hidden in his Texan ranch.
When the cops tried to raid the place they fired back. The standoff lasted 51 days, at the end of which the group put their own headquarters on fire killing themselves.
10. Men, women, and children cut, burned and stabbed each other to commit suicide in Nazi Germany.
Suicides happened across Nazi Germany after they lost the war. Thousands of women drowned their babies and then poisoned themselves as the Red Army advanced. The rest trusted one another to cut their throats and wrists – effectively helping each other in committing suicide.
This happened because the rumours spread across Germany that the Red Soviet army was pillaging, raping and murdering as they moved across villages and cities.
