Four Years After Husband’s Death, Wife Of Martyr Joins The Indian Army As Lieutenant

Setting another brave example of the resolute strength and courage that all the army wives carry in their hearts, Sangeeta Mall, wife of a rifleman who attained martyrdom in 2015, is standing tall with her inspiring story.

Sangeeta married Shishir Mall who was part of Gorkha Rifles in 2013. He died in a gun battle against the terrorists at Baramulla sector of Jammu and Kashmir in 2015. Sangeeta, a teacher by profession quit her job to be by her mother-in-law’s side during the tough times.

Sangeeta wanted to join the armed forces after she attended an investiture ceremony in Ranikhet in 2016 where they awarded her husband with Sena Medal, her brother-in-law told TOI.

Since then, there was no looking back for her. She soon cleared the OTA exam with flying colors and joined the Officer’s Training Academy in Chennai. After a tough training and rigorous hard work, she was commissioned in the army as a Lieutenant, recently.

“Our family had to face several challenges but now, it is a matter of pride for us that she has become a commissioned officer. We are planning a grand welcome for her once she returns home,” said Sangeeta’s brother-in-law.

He also mentioned that Sangeeta suffered a miscarriage that added to her agony but she was never alone in her fight. She always had her mother-in-law and family’s support to motivate her in getting into the shoes of her late husband.

Army wives have time and again proved that they are nothing less courageous than their lionhearted husbands. Sangeeta’s inspiring story is one such example of exemplary strength and determination to serve the nation.
