Having said that did you know that cannabis is considered sacred in a few temples of North Karnataka. In fact, it is even served as prasad to devotees. According to TOI, the devotees of the Sharana, Aruda, Shaptha, and Avadhuta traditions, allegedly consume marijuana or ganja in various forms as they believe it helps to achieve enlightenment.

Interestingly, the Mouneshwara temple at Tinthini in Yadgir district conducts an annual fair for devotees in January. The visitors reportedly receive small packets of marijuana as prasad here. The devotees supposedly smoke the prasad after praying to Mouneshwara or Manappa, reports News18.

Gangadhar Nayak, a member of the temple committee, was quoted saying, “The devotees and saints believe this sacred grass shows the path to enhancing knowledge of spirituality.”

However, the temple authorities have denied that any form of cannabis is sold to outsiders for recreational purposes. Nayak added,

“During the fair, anybody can come here and smoke. While some eat ganja after boiling it, others consume it like tobacco powder.”

Speaking about addiction, Mahantesh K, who is into the Sharana tradition and visits various temples, was quoted saying, “I believe ganja helps achieve a kind of infinite happiness. It’s not addictive. Many smokes once a week or day and meditate.” He even added that many users reportedly feel it has medicinal values.
