Manipur Police Are Giving Toffees Instead Of Fine To Helmetless Riders, Here’s Why!

When a few months ago, the government approved the new Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill which imposes hefty fines on traffic violators, I heard a lot of people say around me that it won’t make a difference. Earlier violators would pay fines and were let go without much change in their behavior. Now, they’ll pay a little more. “No big deal”, they said.

However, Manipur Traffic Police has come up with a new and innovative way to “punish” those violating traffic rules. According to sources, if found without a helmet, the traffic police officials are making the violators get off their bikes, push the bikes to a certain distance, and offer them toffees after! They also counselled them on safety tips, individually.

This took place in Manipur’s Churachandpur district. This awareness drive is being held under the supervision of SSP Amrita Sinha.

“We are carrying out the helmet drive to check those bike/two-wheeler riders, who are moving around without wearing their helmets – either they do not have a helmet or they have forgotten it at their house or they might be keeping it in the vehicle itself and not wearing it,” she said.

She further went to point out that imposing fines on violators hasn’t brought much change. Their main intention is to bring about real change and hence, they decided on this idea!

“Imposing some fines is not bringing about any change and our intention is to bring about some change, to instil some kind of safety sense in the minds of people because helmet protects an individual and it is not for anybody else and it is for their own safety that we’re doing this,” SSP Sinha said.

Earlier, Kerala Traffic Police officials were spotted feeding ladoos to those riding bikes without helmets. Seems like this trend is spreading across the nation!
