Employee Shares How Manager Gives Them Extra Work Right When They’re About To Leave Office

Toxic managers are a nightmare to deal with. These are the ones who don’t respect boundaries, expect you to be available at all hours, and make unreasonable demands that go beyond work hours. They’re the kind of bosses who equate dedication with late hours and seem to thrive on exerting control. Such toxic behavior doesn’t just make work stressful – it can disrupt a person’s whole life, from eating habits to sleep schedules.

Recently, a Reddit user took to the r/IndianWorkplace subreddit to share their experience with a boss who seems to be the very definition of toxic. Despite having clear work hours of 10:30 AM to 7:30 PM, this employee’s manager always assigns extra tasks right when they’re about to leave, making them stay back until 8:30 or 9 PM.

To make matters worse, the employee has a long commute home, arriving as late as 12:30 AM. Lack of sleep and irregular meals have taken a toll, and when they tried leaving without telling their boss, they faced harsh criticism the next day.

“I recently joined a new company which is quite far away from my home. I have always come before time, my working hours at 10:30-7:30 and I reach work by or before 10. I do my daily tasks which I am assigned and get it done by 7-7:15 max. Every time I tell my boss I am done for the day and am leaving, he assigns me another thing to do before work which makes me stay till 8:30-9 at least. I get home by 12-12:30 at night! I have tried leaving without informing him once and I got an earful the next day. How do I tell my boss that I am not doing my work on time so he can give me more work instead of letting me go home? Every time I say that I am leaving, he always says that I am leaving EARLY even though I leave on time. It’s getting out of hands because I can’t sleep enough due to reaching home so late and my eating schedule is all messed up. How do I make him understand that there is a check out time so people can leave by then and not after that?” the user posted.

Support poured in from everywhere. While many suggested standing up for oneself, documenting the situation, or demanding compensation for overtime, others advised finding a new job if the toxic behavior continues. Have a look at some of the reactions here:

In the end, it’s clear that no job is worth sacrificing mental and physical health over a boss who doesn’t respect your time.
