In many workplaces today, there is a noticeable lack of empathy when it comes to handling employee crises. Employees are expected to show up or remain productive despite an emergency or a personal crisis. There is a lack of adequate support coming from employers and many employees tend to struggle because of this.
For example, a recent viral post on X sparked outrage after an employee shared a shocking conversation with their manager following a severe car crash. Despite the emergency, the employee was expected to show up at work. A screenshot of their conversation was shared online.
The employee informed their manager about the car crash and even included a photo of their crushed vehicle. Instead of showing concern for the employee’s health or safety, the manager simply replied, “Keep me updated on what time you’re expecting to be here.”
Have a look:
When the employee didn’t respond, the manager followed up with an even more shocking message.
“It’s understandable why you would be late, but regardless anything that prevents you from being at the workplace other than a death in the family is unexcused at any company.”
what would y’all respond with if your manager says this? pic.twitter.com/bZznlPZrLT

The lack of empathy evident in this conversation outraged people. Many shared their own personal experiences with such managers and discussed how this highlights a bigger problem – companies expecting employees to work even in crisis situations. Here’s how some people reacted:
i told my manager i had covid and he said he didn’t believe me

Called into work to tell my boss that my wife had given birth during the night. He wanted to know how soon I could get into the office. When his kid was born he disappeared for three weeks.

Had this happen once.
Car upside down in a ditch and boss asks how I’m getting to work, never asked if I was ok https://t.co/KQDBBtKEXc— Springpeak | GAMEONJUICE (@Springpeak_) October 24, 2024
I remember @Shopify – a close friend died suddenly and tragically young. I skipped meetings that day. The boss at the time called me and said “I understand you’ve had stuff going on, but I expect you to keep me updated on (random project, that I can’t remember)” – I left shortly… https://t.co/xqTU4rdzvV

Workplaces need to be more compassionate, especially in times of crisis. Don’t you think?
