Man And His Doggo Are Traveling Across 7 Continents. No Big Deal, You Say? They’re Walking.

“The journey not the arrival matters.”- T. S. Eliot

This is especially true in the lives of some like Tom Turcich and his dog Savannah. The inseparable duo is on one long walk which is to span five years and seven continents.

Till now they have done over 700 days traversing more than 10,000 kilometres. And this once in a lifetime journey is nowhere close to being over.

Tom, sharing his experience on Reddit revealed what motivated to embark on this epic adventure. He talked about the fragility of life and said,

“I had a friend, Anne Marie, who died at seventeen. I’d never been close to someone who died before. Her death reordered my understanding of the world. I suddenly saw life as something fragile and fleeting. I needed to make the most of the short time I had – I wanted adventure and to see the world.”

Tom left his home on April 2nd, 2015 in New Jersey to take on the ambitious project. In Texas, he adopted Savannah. When she was still a puppy he would push her in his cart. But he says that she now walks about 50 km a day.

He’s finished the first leg of his escapade. He’s done North and South America and has also checked Antarctica off his bucket list. He has now flown with Samantha to explore the European trails.

He named his project ‘The World Walk‘ that is where he curates his daily journey. He shares his photos and writings about his travels and his adorable doggo.

And if you’re worried about how Savannah manages to climb uneven terrain, don’t worry she has ‘Ruffwear Grip Trex’ and ‘Doggles’ which are basically Dog-goggles (and that’s basically the cutest thing EVER!)

He knew this was trip he was destined for from the ripe age of seventeen. So he saved up and lived frugally that by twenty-six he had enough dough to make his dream come true.

He knew that if he didn’t live extravagantly on his tour he could walk while still paying off some student loans he has accumulated. However, before leaving an organisation reached him who knew his friend who had passed. They agreed to fund his walking adventure. They also donate a dollar for every mile he walks in a scholarship in her name.

Tom and Savannah are proof that every ordinary person has the power to make their lives extraordinary.

After having seen some of the most wondrous sights that most of us can only hope for he’s probably learned more on the road than ever before.

I know the traveller in you is itching to pack up and undertake the journey of a lifetime. But if you’re thinking twice, remember, the famous travel writer Jack Kerouac once said, “In the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain!” Just go ahead and do it, trust me (and take your furball along, you’ll always have a companion)!
