The only way we can do our bit in returning the favour of our soldiers who risk their life at the borders for our safety is to admire and appreciate their efforts. Every soldier has his own story, his own share of sacrifices and tales of heroism the entire nation should definitely know!

One such tale of atonement, love and dedication for the motherland comes from Major Shashidharan Nair who laid his life on duty at LOC, recently.

“He was passionate about army. After getting BSc degree from Fergusson, he never thought about any other career option and started preparing for army exam,” told Harish Kasarkhod, a childhood friend of Major Nair. He was left behind with his mother and wife after his father passed away a couple of years back reported The New Indian Express.

Nair first met his wife, Trupti in Pune through mutual friends. Their friendship soon nurtured into love and the couple exchanged rings soon after that.

Trupti was a professional with Masters in Computer Application while Nair boasted the title of Captain back then, reported News 18. It wasn’t, however, a cake walk for them.

Just eight months into the bliss of engagement Trupti was diagnosed with multiple arterioscleroses which eventually made her bound to the wheelchair. Thrashing the society’s advice of calling off the wedding, Nair stood like a pillar with Trupti and went onto to tie the knot in 2012.

A few months into the wedding Trupti suffered a stroke which paralysed her lower body. But Nair and Trupti took the uncertainty of life with all the grace and chivalry. Their love story was a well-known romance in the army. They would attend all the parties together, sometimes Nair wheeling his wife and other times he carried her in his arms with valour, reported News18.

Major Nair took a month’s leave to spend time with his wife in Pune before he joined back duty on January 2. He was posted at the LoC in Nowshera. Trupti was always worried about her husband’s posting in Kashmir and its inevitable risks. Nair like always promised her to return home soon. He did keep his promise!

The promise that he made to his wife but first the promise that he had made his motherland. Nair was on patrol at LoC when an IED laid down by terrorists exploded and he breathed his last.

His body arrived at the National War Memorial in Pune on Saturday and his wife Trupti sat on the wheelchair bidding his pillar of strength a final goodbye.

“It broke my heart to no extent when she looked me in the eyes a day before his funeral with that cold, emotionless, hollow, blank look” says Rohit Nair to NDTV. ”I can only pray to god to give her strength.”

Nair did return back home soon, but this time wrapped in the tricolour. May his soul rest in peace!
