Video Shows Team Of Surgeons Harvesting A Smoker’s Tar-Filled Lungs

The use of tobacco is detrimental to our physical and mental health. We’ve read about it in books, we’ve seen the advertisements in movie halls and we’ve heard our doctors say it too. Studies have shown that smokers are more likely to develop depression and schizophrenia. But if we need any more proof that cigarette smoking is injurious to health, this video ought to do it.

According to NDTV, a team of surgeons from Wuxi People’s Hospital in China headed by Doctor Chen Jingyu extracted the lungs of a 52-year-old organ donor after his death. However, they rejected them because they were filled with tar.

Metro UK reports that the lungs were black instead of pink due to the donor’s smoking addiction. He had been regularly smoking a pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years before dying of lung diseases. Dr. Chen shared the video on Chinese social media with the hashtag “jieyan” which translates to “quit smoking” and wrote, “Look at these lungs – do you still have the courage to smoke?”

He further revealed,

“The patient didn’t undergo a CT scan before his death. He was declared brain dead, and his lungs were donated shortly after that. Initial oxygenation index tests were okay, but when we harvested the organs, we realized we wouldn’t be able to use them.”

People thought that the blackened and inflamed lungs were enough to dissuade anyone from smoking in the future.

E-cigarettes have been banned in India but other tobacco products continue to be sold, so it is up to individuals to kick the butt.
