26-Year-Old From Rajasthan Works At Google But His Father Is Still A Labourer By Choice

They say hard work can take you places. And, that’s damn true.

Take it from Ram Chandra, who is a son of a labourer and, hails from a small town called Sojat in Rajasthan and now works at Google’s US office.

Ram worked really hard, became a software engineer, landed a job first at Google India and is now placed at the multi-national tech giant’s Seattle office.

Ram might have a coveted salary and an exciting life, but his father is still a labourer by choice. He still loads sacks of henna and continues to work hard each day, earning Rs 400 on his good days. He says he feels useless if he’s not working.

Ram overcame his financial shortcomings to reach where he is now. In order to crack the IIT entrance exam and seek coaching for the same, he had to take a loan from a judicial officer, who was posted in Kota.

When he did crack the exam, he took admission in IIT-Roorkee in 2009, after another family from Sojat helped him with his first-semester fee. He told Hindustan Times,

“They bought me a suitcase and some clothes to wear in college. Later, some people from the community raised Rs 30,000 to buy a laptop for me My father took a loan to pay the second-semester fee. I got an education loan in the second year to fund the rest of my education.”

He got Rs 30,000 as stipend from his college scholarship for three years. And out of that, he saved Rs 70,000 so that he could build his parents a proper kitchen.

When he landed the job at Google India, he cleared his loans – Rs 5 lakh toward his education loan and Rs 3.5 lakhs his father owed other individuals.

“People didn’t take back the money they lent me when I offered to repay. They said help the needy, bright students who are like me.”

But Ram only wants to work until the time he’s financially secured.

“I want to work until we become financially secure. After that I will stay with my family in Sojat and become a social worker.”

Now, Ram’s got his parents a 1.5-acre farmland, build a brick-and-mortar house and even takes care of his siblings’ education.

Kudos to him for his hard work!
