Harvard University Says Maha Kumbh Mela Was Better Organised Than 2014 FIFA World Cup

People consider India to be incompetent when it comes to organising things, but this news might change that perspective to some extent.

A book produced by scholars and students of Harvard University along with architects and town planners of international repute, declared that Maha Kumbh 2013 to be better organised than FIFA World Cup in Brazil and Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

‘Kumbh Mela – Mapping the Ephemeral Megacity’ is a 449-page book describing the world’s biggest religious congregation and is distinct management. It says, “For a country notorious for its ‘lethargic’ bureaucracy, the success of Maha Kumbh is truly noteworthy.”

Both the events in comparison had been in news for their poor management and preparations despite of more then sufficient funds and government involvement. The World Cup in Brazil faced a national outcry and 2010 CW Games were marred by scandals and corruption.

– The tent township is much larger than the size of Manhattan in terms of population.

– More than 100 million come to a small place and stay there for 55 days.

– Nearly 5 million people bath in the holy rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati.

– There are 390 million communication events (calls, messages, etc).

– 146 million (145,736,764) text messages

– 245 million (245,252,102) calls

The book is compiled by the researchers of the South Asia Institute of the Harvard University, US and was launched by chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday.

“So is India, which has high ambition to provide everyone everything from farmers to migrants to factory worker. Its ambitions are very high but capability very low, and then it generates disappointment. But the Maha Kumbh management and success belies this notion,” the book says.
