Remember when Amitabh Bachchan flashed us all with his LED lights studded costume while singing ‘Sara Zamana Haseeno Ka Deewana‘ in Yaarana?

What am I asking? Of course, you remember the iconic song and the even iconic costume! If you have never discussed this (amongst your other millennial problems) the bling-blink was very 80’s. In fact, it was one of the signature trends that immortalised the era.

Well, as fate would have it, the eye-catching fad is making a comeback. No, Big B is not starring in a sequel to re-create the look, instead, you can call it my humble and pitiable effort to find comic relief in a rather unfortunate incident.

For those who still think that Global Warming is just a text-book phenomenon, the smog levels in Kolkata has reached a point where cops have been given LED lights studded uniform to make their late-night patrols a little easier, especially in Winters.

According to Times of India, ‘body lights’ including 1,000 red-and-blue LED shoulder lights were distributed among sergeants to ensure the safety of cops, especially in dimly lit, accident-prone areas. Sumit Kumar, DC, Traffic, said,

“This time, we will distribute them even among constables. Their safety and security is important to us.”

Reportedly, another 3,000 shoulder lights will be ordered soon to keep the team equipped.

Another Lalbazaar official added that the lights will help commuters spot them from even 500 meters away.

“This will allow motorists check their speed and know that they are being watched. It has three advantages – one, the device will act as a protective device.

Two, it will help cops during checks and last, it will act as a deterrent against speeding and signal violation as motorists will know that they are under watch.”

Reports also suggest that the initiative was considered after Sudip Roy, a young traffic sergeant of Kolkata Traffic Police lost his right leg in a road accident while he was on duty last year in December.

He sustained major injuries to his pelvis joint and later was equipped with a prosthetic leg.

Now, while the measure has just been implemented, we hope that it helps prevent such mishaps and ensures safety of the cops.
