Kolkata Couple Verbally Harassed On Local Train, Girl Threatened For Wearing Jeans

Last month Kolkata showed its ugly side when a bunch of elderly, frustrated men thrashed a couple in the Metro. And the reason for that was because the couple was hugging each other. This led to a massive protest where youngsters from all across the city came together to promote love and weed out hatred. However, given how another couple aboard a Kolkata Local Train was harassed, it looks like the city will always have men who have no idea how to mind their own business.

In a Facebook post, a Kolkata girl narrated the incident where she and her boyfriend were publicly harassed by two men under the garb of moral policing.

“like every other day, I had boarded the train from sealdah. Although it was unbearably hot, some dim-witted, middle-aged men refused to give us some space to sit. after requesting them multiple times, we got a little space to sit, only to hear them say ‘this isn’t the ladies compartment, go to the ladies compartment’.”

Everyone knows that the general compartment is for both men and women. So, it’s odd that somebody would think otherwise in this day and age.

For some reason or the other, the couple later vacated their seats and the person who was complaining the most about their presence sat in that very seat. So, the girl humbly asked him about how comfortable he was now.

“Things didn’t end there. As soon as we got up, the person who was complaining sat in our seat. So, I asked him ‘Uncle, you aren’t feeling hot anymore? Now you have enough space to sit?”

The man couldn’t handle this statement and responded with the only thing he had in his arsenal: sexism. Firstly, he told the girl’s boyfriend to take the girl and let her sit on his lap. Then he supported the incident at the Metro. And to top it all off, he told the girl, who was wearing a top and a jeans, to not wear such clothes and get on trains.

Probably fearing that things might go out of hand, the girl whipped out her smartphone and recorded the entire incident and put the mens’ faces up for display.

“He told us ‘go home and sit on each other’s laps’. He also said ‘the metro case happened because of the type of people in your generation’. he said ‘don’t get on trains wearing these kind of clothes’ And i was wearing a normal regular jeans and a top.”

The man (in a green t-shirt) can be seen shouting at the boyfriend (who’s off-camera) and derogatorily calling him a woman. Additionally, another man can be seen chiming in with him and commenting on the girl’s dress. And, as if that’s not enough, the man ends up throwing threats of physical abuse, while others watch in silence.

Starting from a metro case to Chanda Nagar mela , this all situation came in a pattern..and this time I became one of the victim today.

I just want to say is this our country? A place where women give birth to men and are disrespected by them on a daily basis?
This is our new society where it’s a daily routine to listen to all this when you board a train or a bus?
I just want to ask is this a behaviour which can be expected from the seniors.
