Couple Heads Home From Delhi To Kerala Amid Lockdown, Wife Tests Positive For COVID-19

It’s been a month that Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people to avoid traveling and stay wherever they are. But it is becoming difficult for people who are stuck in hotels away from their home paying thousands of rupees per day.

An elderly couple from Kerala had returned to Delhi after their visiting son in Melbourne, Australia, reports TOI. They were sent to quarantine in a hotel for 14 days. The couple decided to follow the lockdown and remain in the hotel but as the rent of the hotel room rose to 6000 per day, they decided to take a road trip to their home in Kottayam, Kerala, 3500 km from Delhi, reports The Week.

A relative of theirs who works with Delhi police helped them out. He drove the couple all the way to Cumbammet on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border where security personnel stopped them and asked the police officer to return home and sent the couple to a nearby quarantine center.

The couple’s blood samples were taken and the 65-year-old woman has tested positive for COVID-19. Her husband has, however, tested negative. But as the woman hails from Kottayam she’ll be soon shifted to a medical college there for further treatment, Idukki district medical officer N Priya said.

The details of the couple’s relative who drove them to Kerala have been shared with the Delhi police for further investigation, the district collector assured.

While the lockdown is causing inconvenience to people all over the country, we request everyone to please keep patience and act wisely at such tough times. Traveling for such a long distance will only put your life at grave risk.
