Kerala Engineering Student’s Phone Gets Confiscated For Listening To Music While Taking Bath

I studied in an all-girls convent school where we had parent calls and got punished for bizarre reasons. Once, my friends and I got punished for celebrating someone’s birthday by bringing a birthday cake inside the classroom during lunchtime. Another time, I got shouted at because I was opening the windows of the classroom while the teacher was entering the class. Do all these make sense? No. But these kept happening.

Similarly, a female engineering student from the college Amal Jyothi College of Engineering, Kerala, had her phone confiscated by the hostel warden, named Sister Maya, and had to write an apology to the warden for listening to music while taking a bath. A picture of the apology note was shared on Reddit.

“I sincerely apologise for hearing songs in my phone while having bath and this won’t happen again. I kindly request you to return my phone as I have important works and project to complete,” the apology note read.

The incident happened in October 2022. Have a look:

People online slammed the authorities for taking strict actions for such little things. Many who came from convent or private colleges also shared similar experiences. Have a look:

As it turns out, Amal Jyothi College of Engineering is currently in the midst of immense controversy. The institute has been indefinitely shut down due to rising protests by the students after a 20-year-old student died by suicide, reported TNIE. The student had alleged emotional harassment by the faculty and hostel warden, the same woman mentioned in the above-attached letter.

It is alleged that the student committed suicide after she was reprimanded by the college authorities for using a cell phone inside the college laboratory.
