These Powerful Haiku Shattering Menstrual Taboos Are Winning The Internet

Menstruation is a boon for the society and it makes its women feel like it’s a bane and makes them lesser than the men because of it. The very power that makes us capable of procreating is called impurity and women are blamed and denied their right to live their lives. A third-year MBBS student James Paul and his friends studying at Calicut Medical College in Kozhikode, Kerala came up with an idea to fight this prejudice.

They started an intra-college event called the ‘Haiku: Micro Tales On Menstruation Taboos’, as their bit to support the internationally known ‘Happy to Bleed’ movement, ahead of the International Women’s Day, this March.

Traditionally, ‘haiku’ are Japanese poems of just seventeen syllables. They are short poems that convey powerful messages, which this subject definitely needs.
