Kavita Kaushik Gets Candid About Saying No To Motherhood & How It Is Not An Obligation For Women

Have you guys seen the desi sitcom ‘FIR’ that was set in fictional Imaan Chowki in Rawanpur? The crime-fighting comedy series was such a breath of fresh air amidst all the other drama-centric soaps, right? Even if you haven’t, I’m sure you are familiar with television’s most fearless female cop, Chandramukhi Chautala. She’s tough and has a no-nonsense attitude towards bad guys who she locks up behind bars in style.

Kavita Kaushik, the actress that essayed the role to perfection is pretty much a badass in real life too. Be it refusing negative roles on TV or standing up against body shaming, she’s always been an inspiration for Indian women.

In an interview with the Hindustan Times recently, she got candid about how she and her husband, Ronnit Biswas, have chosen not to become parents. In a society that is obsessed with the question, “Koi good news?”, the couple spreads an empowering message that parenthood is a choice, not an obligation.

She revealed,

“I don’t want to be unfair to the child. If I have a child in my 40s, by the time my child would be 20, we would’ve touched our old age. I don’t want our child to take care of old parents in his/her 20s.”

After a certain age, women are seldom pressured into motherhood citing various reasons like biological clocks, completion of families or fulfilling maternal desires. And women who decide to go against the grain are considered selfish and heartless. But Kavita sticks to her guns saying,

“Maybe we are not maternal and paternal as people. We want to make the world a lighter place and don’t want to bring up a child to this overcrowded city and throw him in the struggles of Mumbai.”

“Ronnit lost his parents when he was very young and even I, being the only child, had to do a lot of hard work to make a living and support my family. So now, we are enjoying life like kids, travelling and achieving couple goals and more. Sometimes I act like a father to him and he acts like a mother to me. We fulfil the things that we don’t have in each other’s lives, thus, we don’t feel the need to have a child.”

Here is what else they had to say.

“We’ve already adopted our father’s extended family in the village in Rajasthan. We take care of them in the best of our capabilities. We like to do things for others.”

This couple is shattering social taboos like a boss. To each, his/her own, right?
