Bebo Calls ‘Forrest Gump’ An ‘Elitist Kind Of Classist Film’, Desi Redditors Facepalm

Sometimes, Bollywood celebrities end up blurting out bizarre statements during interviews. In the past, we have been Ranbir Kapoor shaming Anushka Sharma for battling anxiety, Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor expressing his distress at not being able to afford a Lamborghini, and the list goes on.

This time, it’s Kareena Kapoor Khan who has been promoting her upcoming film ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ alongside Aamir Khan. In an interview with News18, she went on to call ‘Forrest Gump’, the original film based on which LSC is made, an “elitist kind of classist film”. A video from the interview was shared on r/BollyBlindsNGossip on Reddit.

Kareena says Forrest Gump is an “elitist kind of classist film”. from BollyBlindsNGossip

What she basically wanted to say is that since ‘Forrest Gump’ is an American film, a majority of people who are a part of the Indian audience have not watched the film. So for such people, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ will just be a story and not a remake of ‘Forrest Gump’.

Let’s rewind a little. The interviewer asked Kareena whether she had apprehensions about signing the film because the original ‘Forrest Gump’ has been watched by plenty of people. To this, Bebo replied:

“No, because it’s an original adaptation in a different language. Our language and our sentiments are very different from theirs also. So, we’ve adapted it for our Indian screens and I’m sure people would enjoy it. But there are still a lot of people who haven’t watched ‘Forrest Gump’…the masses would not have seen. It is an elitist, kind of classist film. So they’ll (Indian audience) will see it for a story and not because it’s a remake of ‘Forrest Gump’.”

To call Forrest Gump “elitist” or  “classist” can be considered incorrect or an exaggeration because the film was a mainstream Hollywood movie which is readily available for people across the world to watch. So, many people who watched her interview facepalm-ed at her statement.
