Few films in Bollywood have had as much of an impact on a generation as ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’. The story, following the theme of “pyaar dosti hai”, inspired several romances to blossom from unbreakable friendships. However, when Karan Johar talked about his debut film recently, he didn’t have many words of praise.
18 years since the release of his debut film, Karan Johar finds the theme of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai ‘silly’.
“Actually, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is a very unusually silly theme. Don’t know what the mother wrote in those eight letters, how can an eight-year-old read that?”
He even goes on to highlight some very significant logical flaws in the film.
“He (the hero) says, Zindagi may pyaar ek bar hota hai, shaadi ek bar hoti hai, but he himself has fallen in love twice, got married twice. Everything was wrong, but it was written with so much conviction that it made sense.”
18 years later, he himself wonders why he wrote such a story and how such thoughts came to his mind.
“I was 24 when I wrote that film. But I can’t write the same film now.”
To be honest, despite all of its supposed flaws and disconnects with logic, the film is one of the most romantic films in the industry and has served as an inspiration to several budding romances. Thanks, Karan Johar for making this ‘silly’ film!
