Google Shows Kannada As “Ugliest” Language, Apologises & Removes It After Backlash

A simple Google query with the keywords “ugliest language in India” showed a surprising search result as the Kannada language popped up on the top. The Google answer was sourced from a website called debtconsolidationsquad.com which was then mass reported by many users in India, as they shared the screenshot of the questionable search result. As per a report in Deccan Herald, Kannada & Culture Minister Aravind Limbavali stated that he had directed the Kannada & Culture secretary to consult the law department and issue a notice to Google.

Amid widespread criticism, Google soon apologized and altered the search results by excluding the webpage from where the text result was sourced from, TOI reports. A Google spokesperson stated, “Search isn’t always perfect. Sometimes, the way content is described on the internet can yield surprising results to specific queries. We know this is not ideal, but we take swift corrective action when we are made aware of an issue and are continually working to improve our algorithms. Naturally, these are not reflective of the opinions of Google, and we apologize for the misunderstanding and hurting any sentiments.”
