“A Bra Is Not A Danger To The Society!” Kangana Ranaut Speaks Out Against The Censor Board

The controversy surrounding Udta Punjab and its filmmakers’ tiff with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is not new. Ever since Pahlaj Nihalani took the helm of the censor board, controversies and backlash have followed him some way or the other.

In a recent event, Kangana Ranaut was awarded the ‘CNN-News18 Indian of the Year, 2015 – Special Achievement’ award. In her acceptance speech, she had some pretty strong words against the censor board and its goings on in the film industry.

Kangana spoke out about how the censor board asked for the blurring of her bra in her film Queen, and how this kind of parental attitude towards the audience is unneeded.

She said that when her director called her and notified her about this development, they both were furious. She further added, “This reminds me of a particular incident in my movie Queen. There is a scene where my bra is on the bed… One day my director called me and said that censor board asked to blur it. We had put a lot of work on that bra. It was flown abroad all the way from Lajpat Nagar. So, we were shocked. Why do we see it as a danger to society? A woman’s bra is not a danger to society!”

She also said that she’s been concerned about how the CBFC is handling matters with regards to films and it’s not a good turn of events.

“To an extent, they (the directors) feel bullied.”

Speaking out against how the censor board officials treat the directors, Kangana said, “We have been very concerned with the way things are going. I am not a director, I have never been through the process. But my very close friends and people I closely work with seem extremely disturbed with the way things are.”

While accepting her award, she also said that she supports the officials at the censor board, but what they’re doing lately is not censorship.
