Born to a businessman father and a school teacher mother, Kangana’s career was pre decided by her parents who wanted their daughter to pursue a career in medical science. But when she failed a unit test in Chemistry, she rethought about her career choices and yearning for her own space and freedom, moved to Delhi at age of 16. When she revealed to her parents about her plans of entering the acting field, her father being totally against the idea said he would not finance a career he believed to be totally aimless.

2. When she left modelling because it did not offer any scope for creativity

Living on her own and battling a confused state of mind about which lane to pick, she said yes to Elite Modelling Agency and picked up a few assignments. However, she soon realized that a career in modelling is not her thing because she could not see any scope for creativity in it. Things started to fall in place for her when she enrolled herself at Asmita Theatre Group in Delhi.

Once during a play, one of the male members in her play went missing and she handled his role along with her own original role as a woman with total awesomeness. The positive response from the audience prompted her to come to Mumbai and there she enrolled herself for a four month acting course in Asha Chandra’s drama school. From then on the doors kept opening up for her; not easily, but they did.

4. She has had bread-with-achaar days

Refusing to accept the financial assistance from her parents was a decision she regretted but then the fact is that she has been a strong-headed girl since ever. With no support from relatives and family whatsoever, she walked the path alone and reconciled after Life In A Metro released in 2007.

5. She came with 1,500 rupees to Mumbai and now is the Queen

She carries the determination to keep doing well but has no fear whatsoever to hit rock bottom. Trying to make ends meet in one of the most expensive cities of India; she has done that. She has stayed in that trying phase for almost a decade; who can deter her confidence now!

6. Her initial roles made people think of her as a neurotic in real life. But all she is, is just an amazing actress

She wanted to come out as a winner and hence, did the roles that came her way with full heart and conviction. Post Gangster success, the roles that were offered to her were all of neurotic characters. And performing those roles with such sheer dedication had started to affect her regular life off screen. So, when Dirty Picture came her way, she said no because she did not want to keep dying in her movies and instead accepted Tanu Weds Manu and we loved her for that change.

7. Because she believes in and fights for gender equality

As a child, she used to hate it when her brother used to get toy guns from his father while she on the other hand was bought dolls. And now when she is taking the industry by storm, equal wages for both actors and actresses is what she has been seen debating about and she is pretty hopeful that, that day will come.

8. She knows that being fair skinned can never be source for one’s self-confidence

She turned down the offer in which she was offered a couple of crores to endorse a fairness product brand and when asked why in an interview she said, “Ever since I was a kid, I have never understood the concept of fairness..” She further added, “My sister (Rangoli Ranaut) is dusky, yet beautiful. If I go ahead and be part of this campaign, then, in a way, I would be insulting her. If I can’t do that to my sister, then how can I do it to the entire nation?”

9. Her initial days of survival in the industry still shake her up a little

In her interview to DNA in 2013, she said, “People in the industry treated me like I didn’t deserve to be spoken to and I was some unwanted object. I couldn’t speak English fluently and people made fun of me for that. So dealing with rejection became a part of life. … All that has taken a toll, I guess. I find it hard to deal with praise. Today, when people say that I have made it and made it on my own, I feel like locking up myself somewhere … It scares me.”

10. She yearns for an audience, not fans

Unlike some of the boastful actors and actresses out there, she seem totally modest about her achievements and finds it absurd that actors are perceived as “stars”. She was quoted as saying “If I have to tell you honestly, I want an audience and not fans.” Yes, she is wise like that!

 11. She experimented with fashion as a child and now is the fashionista of Bollywood

A young Kangana experimented with fashion a lot and wore combinations that her neighbours used to find bizarre. But her experimentation evolved her into this awesome girl who knows how to pull off just about any attire with total grace.

12. And her “personal” opinion on marriage takes the cake away!

Her parents are happily married and so is her sister Rangoli. But this girl, who by the way is brutally awesome in her opinions, does not get why marriage is seen as the ultimate life purpose for women when actually they should be encouraged to be whatever it is that they want to be in their lives. Now while she would love to have a companion for life, she would not want to marry and be bound by a relationship.

Kangana Ranaut’s life path has not been a piece of cake exactly. But then again, most amazing personalities we know today are the outcomes of most gruelling but nevertheless, inspiring journeys. Personally I feel, her story justifies the saying “whatever happens, happens for good”. So if you have failed at something or are still stuck in what you believe is your worst, chill, because the awesome you is in the making.
