Did You Know That Dr. Kalam Donated Rs. 2.5 Lakhs Meant For Iftaar Party To 28 Orphanages?

President Kalam, a Muslim, never preferred wasting money on lavish Iftar parties that became a part of the capital’s political culture back then. During his tenure, he called off the traditionally organised huge Iftar party at Rashtrapati Bhavan during the holy month of Ramzan for the first time.

In his book The Kalam Effect: My Years with the President, Kalam’s secretary P.M. Nair exclaims, how the former President of India scrapped the holy Iftar and announced the government money (Rs 2.5 lakhs) saved would be donated to 28 orphanages for their welfare.

He organised a team that went on to distribute rice, flour, pulses, blankets, sweaters and ultimately helping the poor during this holy month.

After donating the public money, he wrote a cheque of Rs 1 lakh from his personal account and asked Nair to distribute the money among the poor. He hoped his approach would usher in peace, prosperity and harmony at least for some people in the country.

Does India have any secular leader with this big heart?
