It is believed that before Joker became Joker, he had super sanity. This super sanity is kind of a superpower. A person with super sanity has the ability to has the ability to see all things as they truly are. It is probably this ability that turned him into the Joker.

This drives him insane and ultimately makes him his own arch-nemesis, the Joker.
