When I was fresh out of college, I had a good few months to spare. Results hadn’t come out yet, admissions for Masters hadn’t yet started, so I decided to look for a job that I could do meanwhile and earn some bucks for the occasional night out with friends. And I ended up working at sales for an online grocery delivery service, which is now a giant but until a few years ago was struggling.
IT. WAS. THE. HARDEST. THING. I. EVER. HAD. TO. DO. Running after people on the road and convincing them to place an order is way harder than working from within the comfort of my home.
I narrated this little story because many people online have been talking about jobs that are harder than desk jobs. Most of the harder ones are from the service industry and sadly, we don’t talk about it more often. From working at Starbucks to a movie theatre, here are some jobs which people highlighted in the process:
Everyone who "flipped burgers" before getting a desk job knows exactly which one is harder.

I sold instant noodles in a supermarket in Karachi and it was 100% harder than being a culture journalist. https://t.co/m4SfEzUTBF

Just got my first desk job after 16 years of working different levels of food service. I can say with certainty that burger flippers deserve $15 at the very least… https://t.co/oE8ITw6qUe

Working in fast food is harder than being a stay at home attorney https://t.co/dYjqrvHNl7

I've never cried whilst working in an office but I cried multiple times working in hospitality/food. Half the time the managers were worse than the customers. https://t.co/SYDOz6geHs

I worked at McDonalds when I was 16 and literally the worst job I EVER had. Got paid £4.12 p/h to deal with the most ridiculous shit. I’m a Copywriter now and it’s SO much easier in comparison lol. I’m also less likely to get chicken nuggets thrown in my face, too ❤️ https://t.co/sktfGCn55Y

I worked at Cineplex for 4 years and it was 100x more mentally and physically draining than my current desk job that pays over double what I used to make https://t.co/frrPbN68zf

I used to work at a Dairy Queen and when I tell you that changing a bag of ice cream in the freezer is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done I am not exaggerating https://t.co/iBPk5VSlRr

I worked at a certain popular Mexican fast food restaurant and they literally would make me cut by hand for 4 hours or so in a row and didn't care. When I eventually was let go, my hand was permanently messed up from it. Not to mention the constant stress of having to be perfect. https://t.co/Nr0rdFj1ED

Working @Chilis was the worst job I've ever had. Starting new, I was treated poorly by the management and my coworkers, guests were often cruel over the smallest mistakes and many just didn't tip even when I did great. So yeah, respect to burger flippers. https://t.co/88Mi7E5bu3

The first time I got a desk job, I couldn’t believe closing down meant turning off the computer instead of mopping, emptying trash, scraping grill, cleaning restrooms, washing out ice cream machine, counting receipts, wiping tables, prepping for tomorrow…
