Why A Japanese Student Stole Bengaluru Cop’s Chair From His Office To Fight Corruption

31-year-old Hirotoshi Tanaka had come to Bengaluru in 2019 to study English. After he joined the English coaching classes, the principal of the institute asked him to work for its promotion. He also promised him a stipulated amount as salary.

However, after working hard, he hadn’t received his salary. When he brought the subject up with the principal, they ended up having a heated argument According to The Indian Express, Tanaka shouted at the principal and pushed him, who then said, “If you touch me again, you can’t stay in Bengaluru anymore.”

Tanaka lost his cool and hit him.

The principal went on to file a complaint against Tanaka, who suggested that if not a salary, then his tuition fee be returned. The police informed that they had set up a meeting between Tanaka and the Principal to resolve the issue and asked the former to bring a letter of apology.

However, after Tanaka arrived at the police station at RT Nagar and waited for the principal, he was allegedly arrested. His phone was confiscated too.

Tanaka allegedly spent one night at the police station and a further 19 days at the Parappana Agrahara prison. He then got an advocate who bailed him out of jail.

“After I got out on bail, a police officer at RT Nagar police station demanded a bribe — Rs 8,500 — for returning my bag he had kept during my custody,” Tanaka alleged.

He went on to file a complaint with the human rights commission. A hearing was scheduled but the cops didn’t show up.

Tanaka’s student visa expired in February, which means that he has to go back to Japan. However, he planned on extending his stay. And how did he do that?

By stealing a chair from the ACP’s office!

“I stole a chair as I wanted to be booked for the offence and stay in jail so that I can pursue the case against the officers and ensure they are brought to justice before I go back. Provided I have my books and medicines, I can stay in jail,” Tanaka said.

The police on the other hand have said that they won’t press any charges against Tanaka.

“He is already in violation of the Passport Act and Foreigners Act. The FRRO (Foreigners’ Regional Registration Office) gave him time till February 28 to go back to his country, but he hasn’t. He now wants to get himself booked so that he can extend his stay,” the police said.
