Sabyasachi Designs Block-Print Uniforms For Jaisalmer School To Boost Girls’ Education, See Pics

Ace designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee is one of the most renowned names in the Indian fashion industry. Not only has he fashioned his words better than he does clothes on several occasions, but he has also recently embraced pursuing fashion with a cause.

As per a report in News18, Sabyasachi has designed school uniforms for Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls School in Jaisalmer. Sabyasachi’s official Instagram handle shared images of the young girls wearing the blue and maroon designer’s uniform.

This includes a blue knee-length dress with three-quarter sleeves and a round neck. It is paired with cropped elastic waist pants that are maroon in color. There is also Ajrakh work on the uniform around the sleeves and skirt, which is a famous type of block printing in states like Rajasthan and Gujarat.

He undertook this mission in collaboration with Citta, which is a US-based non-profit organization founded by American artist Michael Daube. According to their official website, the project aims at providing education and other vocational skill-building to underprivileged girls in order to help them achieve financial independence through independent and meaningful work.

Sabyasachi’s page subsequently shared another post to explain the creative process that went behind the designing of the uniform. The post read, “I have always believed in the transformative power of education. Its impact ripples upwards and outwards, from an individual level to a society-at-large. Especially dear to me are the initiatives that focus their resources on educating girls — the demographic most limited in access to opportunity and most stifled by archaic social expectations.”

The 46-year old fashion tycoon further added that he wanted to make sure these uniforms reflected the region’s craft heritage, hoping that “it would highlight for the young girls the beauty and power inherent to the craft, as well as provide a better sense of community, connection, and pride for their home.”

As per Indian Express, the school has been designed by a New York-based architect named Diana Kelloggis, also a part of Citta’s initiative. It’s officially slated to open in December 2020.
