An Aquarium Octopus Pulled A ‘Shawshank Redemption’ By Escaping Its Tank Into The Ocean

Pulling a leaf out of Andy Dufresne’s book, an octopus in Australia has shown that it too has brains and more than humans expect it to have.

Inky, an octopus at the New Zealand National Aquarium decided to give it’s tank a slip and find it’s way to freedom

By the time the staff noticed, Inky had left footprints suction prints on its tank which also made the mystery quite easy to solve.

Maintenance workers had left a 6-inch-wide gap at the top of its enclosure and squeezed its football-sized body through the gap to say hello to the Pacific

Aquarium manager Rob Yarrall said, “He managed to make his way to one of the drain holes that go back to the ocean. And off he went. And he didn’t even leave us a message.”

The escape actually took place 3 months ago, but the incident came to light only on Tuesday and Inky instantly rose to fame

Inky had been staying in the aquarium since 2014, when he was caught in a crayfish pot, body scarred and arms injured. Kerry Hewitt, the aquarium’s curator of exhibits, back then had said that Inky was still “getting used to being at the aquarium” and the staff would “have to keep Inky amused or he will get bored.”

We guess Inky did get bored.
