There’s no denying the fact that we all love freebies. While travelling, we all love a free pack of snacks from the airlines or a refreshing welcome drink from the hotel. However, a lot of us are guilty of ‘stealing’ soaps, shampoos, toothbrushes, and other toiletries from our hotel rooms.
But even though it’s a tiny bit embarrassing, it isn’t that big a deal. But what this Indian family did in a hotel in Bali is downright shameful!
A video of an Indian family getting caught stealing literally everything from their hotel room in Bali has gone viral. In the video, the hotel officials can be seen going through all the luggage of the family only to discover that they stole not just the toiletries but also other things like hangers, hairdryer, hand mirror, handwash dispenser, etc. Basically, everything around the hotel room which could fit inside their bags was stolen.
In the video, a woman can be seen shouting at the officials while they vigorously go through their suitcases. She goes on asking the officials to let them go as they had a flight to catch. She even offers to pay them for all the things that were stolen. A man can also be heard saying, “I will pay” and tries offering them a huge amount of money. However, hotel officials remained adamant and refuse to accept payment.
“This is no respect”, said a hotel official sternly.

This family was caught stealing hotel accessories. Such an embarrassment for India.
Each of us carrying an #IndianPassport must remember that we are ambassadors of the nation and behave accordingly.
India must start cancelling passports of people who erode our credibility. pic.twitter.com/unY7DqWoSr

As the video went viral, people didn’t hold back from condemning their actions. It was a popular opinion that the actions of people like these hurt the image of the country and are the reason why Indians are looked at with suspicion in whichever country they visit.
Why do Indians do this I just can’t understand. One shd maintain a certain kind of dignity n class ..What is this #Shame pic.twitter.com/VzmzqmZmVv

This is exactly the reason why Indian railways had the foresight to attach a toilet mug to a chain.
But there is still theft of blankets and pillows taking place.@acjoshi knows best.

What a shame. All those who know this family should share this on WhatsApp widely that dis family should not be able to show their face anywhere when they are back in India. The govt should issue a lookout notice for them at all airports so that they're arrested imdtly on return.

It is not just Indian passport holders but these type of disgraceful actions reflect poorly on the entire Indian diaspora across the world. We all suffer the lowered respect and increased suspicion just based on our race. @MEAIndia should take these Indians to task.

Someone please forward this to home ministry and ministry of foreign affairs.. so that their passports can be cancelled immediately, and should be banned from foreign and domestic tours and hotel stays.. These type of people are just making us feel ashamed in front of whole world

As it turns out, there is an interesting reason behind such behavior. According to a study, the urge to steal from hotel rooms is known as ‘Opportunistic Kleptomania’ and people irrespective of age, nationality, and gender are guilty of it. This condition makes people lose their common sense when they travel and have the feeling that they are not monitored, hence they can do whatever they want under the cloak of anonymity.
So here’s a list of things you can and cannot take (I can’t believe we have to spell this out!):
1. Taking toiletries like soap, shampoo, etc. is okay. Taking the TV is not.
2. If you like the bathrobe, the bedsheet, or the curtains – let the hotel know. All of them are fairly priced and they will charge you for it, but there’s a good chance they’ll give it to you.
3. Be transparent to your hotel officials. No, don’t rant to them about how your girlfriend left you. But usually, all hotel staffers have a fair idea of your profile once you arrive. So be good to them. You never know, that way they might slip in some additional perks for you!
Having said that, stealing from hotels is downright shameful and the embarrassment of getting caught and have a video of you go viral on the internet is…I don’t even know what to call it!
