This is a major step ahead for women in the military. Till now they were only inducted as officers and posted in select areas such as medical, legal, educational, signals and engineering wings of the Army.
Now women will be seen taking a “combat role” which includes policing cantonments and army establishments, preventing the breach of rules and regulations by soldiers, maintaining movement of soldiers as well as logistics during peace and war, handling prisoners of war, and extending aid to civil police.
According to The Economic Times, women will be recruited in a graded manner and will eventually comprise of 20% of the total corps of the military.
People across the country are celebrating the news and are lauding the inclusion of more women into the forces.
