In reply to a Right to information query, Indian Army said that it euthanises dogs and horses at any point if they are rendered unfit for service. The duration can as short as a month. The reply was – “Army horses and dogs are evaluated for their fitness with respect to the performance of duties. The animals which are considered unfit for one-month active service are disposed of by humane euthanasia.”

The Indian Army has Labradors, German Shepherds and Belgian shepherds. The reason that they have given for this act is –
1. The kind of facilities that they get in the Indian Army cannot be continued as they are expensive.
2. It is not safe to leave them in civilian hands as they have been trained with sensitive locations.

After this news spread, PETA sprung to action. A petition is being signed to save them so that they are not killed after serving the nation.

“Animals cannot be tossed away like empty ammunition shells. It is unfortunate that the dogs are euthanised” said Poorva P Joshipura (Peta India CEO).

Also, people from all over the world have been signing this petition to save these animals from the claws of a gruesome act. They deserve to be treated with love and killing them is an appalling thing that one can commit.
