In a country where sex is taboo, condoms are hidden from plain sight in medical stores, and sanitary napkins are given in a black plastic packet to customers, having a shop that exclusively sells sex-toys in your neighbourhood is unthinkable.
However, breaking old barriers and building new paths, Goa has welcomed India’s first legal sex shop named ‘Kama Gizmos’. According to Times Now, the shop is located in Calangute and is created by two competing sex product retailers – Kamakart and Gizomoswala, who came together in partnership to open the store.
Unlike other sex-toys shops outside of India, which have a loud appearance, are laden with neon lights and tucked away in a dark alley, Kama Gizmos looks strikingly ‘normal’ – like any other medical store. And this was consciously done by the owners of the shop in a bid to normalise sex toys and sexual wellness as a whole.
The store has a variety of sexual items such as novelty condoms, gels, vibrators, pumps to harness, etc. which are neatly stacked on shelves inside the shop. There are no “obscene” posters whatsoever and it has the appearance of a medical store.
