Sisterhood Solidarity: Indian Women Online Share How Women Can Support Other Women

In India, many women aren’t encouraged to stand together. Instead, they often view each other as rivals. This mindset breeds competition rather than cooperation. Unlike men who often have unspoken codes of support, women lack a similar culture of solidarity. Yet, just as men understand the value of backing each other up in times of need, women should also embrace supporting one another.

Several Indian women on Reddit’s r/TwoXIndia subreddit have been sharing ways in which women can support other women, in public and in private. Doesn’t matter if they are friends, family, or strangers, if a woman needs help, others need to show up!

Here’s a look at some of the brilliant responses that were shared online:

1. Not snitching on your friends who are dating.

2. Check if her clothes have a stain.

3. Help a woman who is clearly feeling unsafe.

4. Check on your friends if they have reached home.

5. Here’s a very extensive list!

6. If a woman is drunk, check on her.

7. Even if you are no longer friends, don’t reveal their secrets.

8. Tell a woman if she has lipstick on her teeth.

9. If there’s a woman on a solo vacation, offer to click pictures for her.

10. If an unknown girl approaches you for help, go with whatever story she’s saying.

11. Share helpful tips with one another.

12. Help hook her blouse.

13. Tell her she looks pretty!

14. If you spot a woman crying, ask her if she’s okay.

15. Hide whatever your friend needs to hide in front of her parents.

It’s time for women to rewrite the narrative, lifting each other up rather than tearing each other down! 🙂
