Study Proves ‘Happy Wife, Happy Life’ Is Actually True! Dear Men, Are You Listening?

What does it take to have a happy marriage? A big amount of money? A large house? Amazing sex? Deep meaningful conversations and a lot of time to spend with each other? Well, while these may significantly contribute to it, the number one reason behind a happy marriage is a happy wife. Yes folks, the “happy life, happy wife” saying is true and we have proof!

According to a study by researchers from Rutgers University and the University of Michigan, in a heterosexual marriage, a wife’s happiness is more important than the husband’s for the marriage to survive.

“I think it comes down to the fact that when a wife is satisfied with the marriage she tends to do a lot more for her husband, which has a positive effect on his life,” said Deborah Carr, a professor in the department of sociology.

While this might seem a bit unfair because marriage should work both ways with both parties downing things for each other, the study came with its own set of justifications.

Researchers analyzed the data of 394 couples, ages of whom were 60 and were married for 39 years on an average, respectively. The couples were asked a bunch of questions like whether their spouse appreciates them, argues with them, understands their feelings, or gets on their nerves. They were also asked to maintain a record in a journal about how happy they were in a 24-hour period doing things like shopping, household chores, and watching television together.

What they found is that the wife’s happiness is more significant in maintaining a marriage. Since females are more caring and expressive of their emotions, good or bad, the happiness quotient of a marriage depends on them. Men, on the other hand, are more reserved when it comes to expressing their feelings.

“Men tend to be less vocal about their relationships and their level of marital unhappiness might not be translated to their wives”, says Carr.
