The holiday of Halloween falls on Saturday this year but if you’re not into wearing costumes and scaring people, perhaps moon gazing might be up your alley. What’s special this month is that a ‘Harvest Moon’ was visible on October 1 and a ‘Hunter’s Moon’ or ‘Blue Moon’ will be seen on the 31st.

What exactly is a Blue Moon? Is it really blue in colour?

If two full moons appear in a calendar month, the second one is termed as a monthly/calendrical ‘Blue Moon’, reports Forbes. Essentially, the year 2020 has an extra full moon i.e. 13 in total. However, the name is not reflective of its hue. The moon is stunning and bright but not blue in colour.

According to Earthsky, a true blue-colored moon is a rare occurrence that takes place when the atmosphere contains dust or smoke particles which scatter red light.

So, when can we see this special lunar event? October 31st from around 8.19 PM IST (Indian Standard Time).

According to The Indian Express, the last calendrical Blue Moon was seen on March 31, 2018, and the next one will be visible on August 31, 2023, so grab your cameras and don’t miss out on photographing this one! Because a full moon on a Halloween night occurs every 19 years give or take i.e. once in a blue moon!
