In the month of October last year, Maruti Suzuki made an announcement that shattered our hearts. In a decision that took a part of our childhood away from us, the brand made it clear that the iconic ‘Maruti Omni’ would be discontinued from the year 2020.
Come 2019, and its time for another heartbreak for people who grew up in the 90s. Joining the list of terminated Maruti models like the Maruti 800 and the Omni, the brand’s tough child, the Gypsy SUV has faced the axe.
The company has made it absolutely clear that no more orders for the Gypsy, which was launched in 1985, should be entertained as the production of the vehicle has been officially stopped. After running for a whopping 34 years in the market, the decision marks the end of an era.
The Gypsy boasted of a simple but no-frills character and dominated the market for a significant amount of time for being highly enduring.
According to DriveSpark, the gypsy has failed to pass the strict safety and crash test norms of April and October 2019. In order to continue the vehicle, Maruti would have to redesign its entire structure to match the safety requirements and hence, the decision.
The production of the off-roader was also low compared to the other products of the brand which was putting the brand at loss as far as the Gypsy was concerned. This is another reason that led to the discontinuation of the car.
As a result, Netizens went emotional while reacting to the news.
All good things come to an end. I used to have one and a lot of happy times with it. https://t.co/Z8rGeoaauN
