Spacecraft Captures Green Glow Around Mars, Twitter Says ‘Mars Is Online’

European Space Agency’s ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter recently spotted a unique green glow surrounding the ‘red planet’ Mars, reports CNN. Similar kind of green glows are seen on earth during Auroras. More interestingly, the same kind of a green glow is seen surrounding the earth from space but is too faint.

The glow came from oxygen atoms, present in the atmosphere of Mars, interacting with sunlight, reports The Indian Express.

“One of the brightest emissions seen on Earth stems from night glow. More specifically, from oxygen atoms emitting a particular wavelength of light that has never been seen around another planet,” says Jean-Claude Gérard, the study’s Lead Author, Astronomer, and Professor at the Université de Liège in Belgium.
“However, this emission has been predicted to exist at Mars for around 40 years. And, thanks to (Trace Gas Orbiter), we’ve found it,” he added.

A picture of Mar’s green glow was posted by NASA on Twitter along with a ‘Green Lantern’ reference! Have a look:

People on the internet are amused by the gorgeous light. Many cracked jokes about how Mars is “online”, how it has built a “wall”, and how it’s practising social distancing!

The universe keeps surprising us. What a mystery it is!
