It’s 2018 And People Should Stop Gifting These Things Anymore

The art of great gifting is one elusive skill that not everyone can master. Even if you know a person well, figuring out what gift to get them can put you in a huge dilemma. Sometimes, we get it right. And sometimes, we fail miserably. It’s safe to say, we’ve all had some pretty epic #GiftingFail stories to share, both as givers and recipients!

A while ago, I happened to find myself on the receiving end of a rather thoughtless gift. And that’s when, after a lot of pondering, I had an epiphany: It’s 2018, folks. Can we please stop with those ‘typical’ gifts?

People say that when it comes to gifting, it’s the thought that counts. So then, why do we end up gifting things with zero thought put into it? Can we, this new year, at least try and dismiss the age-old tradition of bad gifting?

And can we please start with banning these first?

1. Flowers

Okay, I know roses are romantic and flowers make for a gorgeous sight. But do you know what happens to flowers after a day even? They wilt and die and get thrown away eventually. Is that the fate you want for your heartfelt gift? So much for a ‘memorable’ gift, right?

2. Mugs/Kitchenware

I won’t deny mugs are cute. But aren’t they done-to-death now? And don’t even get me started on vases, cutlery and steel/plastic kitchenware sets that people gift during weddings! All Indian households have such a huge collection of these unused and recycled gifts that we could open our own shops!

3. Daily planners/Corporate stationery

Three words: Everything is digital?

Everyone these days has their appointments on their phone calendars and make notes on their laptops. Cute stationery aside, both your efforts and money spent in gifting daily planners, expensive pens or photo frames would just be gigantic waste and largely unappreciated.

4. Souvenirs

Here’s an R.I.P for all those ‘Thailand’ t-shirts that don’t fit, conch shell keychains that will break in a jiffy, miniature Taj Mahals and Eiffel Towers that will gather dust in showcases and ‘I <3 New York’ mugs that are too plain and boring to be used.

Souvenirs from a trip you took don’t make sense as gifts for others. Instead, they feel a tad bit generic.

5. Gift vouchers

I’m glad we talked about this because if there’s any way of confirming that you didn’t put much thought into a gift, it’s by giving someone gift vouchers.

They’re an easy way of dumping the onus entirely on the recipient: “Here’s a gift voucher. Now your gift is your trouble, not mine!” Rather impersonal, don’t you think? What if the person does not want to shop/buy anything from that particular store? Wasted!

So then, how do you go about picking a good gift that would be much loved and appreciated? Well, think of the gift as making a statement, not just about your own tastes but also about the other person’s.

A thoughtful gift is one that shows your loved one how well you know them, and it all depends on how personal you make it. Take perfumes, for example.

Like music, fragrances too have notes—top, middle and base—each unfolding gradually as you experience a fragrance for the first time. It’s this harmony of notes that determines how the scent will interact with your senses and the kind of sillage (French for ‘wake’) it will leave behind when you walk around wearing it.

Choosing a perfume for someone can be quite a task; it has to be something that would encapsulate their personality and become their calling card. Which is why when you do gift someone a perfume, it is perceived as a rather thoughtful gesture on the giver’s part.

So how do you choose a fragrance that hits the right notes? Well, when in doubt, trust the French! A French perfume is pure luxury. The French have learnt to bottle some deliciously intoxicating scents that are bound to catch your fancy.
