“I Did Not Enjoy That Scene A Lot,” Geeta Phogat On Watching Dangal

Aamir Khan starrer ‘Dangal‘ is garnering some really amazing responses from the masses and the critics. While you enjoyed every bit of the movie and performances by on-screen Geeta, Babita and Mahavir Singh Phogat, there’s one particular scene that real-life Geeta Phogat didn’t quite enjoy.

Speaking to India Today, Geeta divulged that the scene in which on-screen Geeta (Fatima Sana Shaikh) wrestles with Mahavir (Aamir Khan), she didn’t quite enjoy it.

“I did not enjoy watching that scene a lot as I realised how I treated my father and that I started thinking that I am some pahalwan (heavyweight). I did not like that scene as I got emotional watching it.”

She also added how her father often tested her in the akhara.

“It is not that I wrestled only once with my father, he used to often test us in the akhara (training centre). But I loved watching the entire movie.”

And, what did she like the best about the movie? It was the genuine portrayal of wrestling on the mat, mud, and the part where they showcased the national championship.

Adding to the movie’s aptness, Babita chirped,

“We have seen the movie and it is 99% a true reflection of our lives and we loved it. I would like to thank Aamir sir and the entire team of Dangal for showing our story on the big scene.”

Juggling between the role of a father and a taskmaster, Mahavir Singh Phogat left no stone unturned to contribute to his daughters’ success. He said,

“I had to go through that in my life. Just like a headmaster has to juggle, he has to teach the children in the school but not on the ground.”

If you’ve seen the film, you must be quite touched by the scene where the daughters hug Mahavir and sleep, right? To that, he added, that his daughters used to fight to sleep beside him and how it was shown in the movie, correctly.

The Dronacharya Awardee also expressed how delighted he is that through the movie the thinking, of parents who discriminate between their male child and girl child, is changing.

I will tell you about our state Haryana, earlier there was no akhara (training centre) for girls but after 2010 till today there are over 50 akharas for women now. So there is a change in Haryana and maybe in other states like UP & Rajasthan attitudes will also change after watching this movie. I love my girls a lot and gave them the same respect as is given to any male child.

Lo Dangal hogaya!
